Essential Oils to Help You Beat the Winter Blues
There are many reasons why I love essential oils in the winter. Winter essential oils are the perfect natural resource to help protect us from the inevitable cold and flu season. Many of our essential oils contain properties that have been historically used to treat the common cold.
Our essential oils such as Black Pepper, Clove Oil, Juniper Berry, Ginger, and many more create a beautiful smell and natural ambience on top of offering therapeutic benefits for the season switchover period.
Health Benefits of Essential Oils in the Winter
Throughout the winter months, there are times where we can all feel a little low. The change in temperature and reduced daylight hours can make us feel deflated and lacking energy.
We constantly feel the need to stay indoors, keep warm, and reserve our energy. Which is when Essential Oils come into place. There are many benefits to using Essential Oils in the winter, and here I am going to explain just a few of my favourites and how they help benefit my lifestyle.
Improves Seasonal Affective Disorder
Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a disorder that results in the lack of natural light exposure that commonly occurs in the dark winter months. This causes a change in our hormone levels, causing low moods craving our favourite comfort foods resulting in bad sleeping patterns and reduced energy levels.
Our Citrus Bliss, Rose Oils, and Sandalwood Oils are essential oils that work particularly well at this time of the year. These oils work perfectly in helping me to brighten my spirits during bad weather. This oil is essential at this time of year for me as it is an antibacterial and antiviral oil that helps to fight any winter colds and cases of flu too.
Help with Dry Skin and Eczema
Dry skin in the winter is something that unfortunately affects the best of us! Especially flare-ups of eczema. The cold temperatures and dry air of winter cause a lot of us to have dry and itchy skin. The winter months can be brutal, but our essential oils can help to prevent us from these nasty flare-ups.
One of our most popular essential oils Roman Chamomile is a traditional treatment that soothes and calms eczema, inflammation and dry skin. Essential oils penetrate into the deeper layers of our skin and can be used as an anti-inflammatory. When the essential oil is diluted and used on the skin it is an effective treatment providing more than half the positive effect of 0.25% hydrocortisone cream.
Vitamin D Deficiency
As we spend more time indoors, Vitamin D deficiencies are becoming more common due to the lack of sunlight exposure. As days grow shorter and temperatures drop, many of you may feel the same as me and start to feel your mood and energy level slump.
Lower amounts of vitamin D may be to blame. Vitamin D’s role is to help our bodies absorb calcium and phosphorus. These nutrients help us to build strong bones, therefore it is essential we maintain our Vitamin D levels.
Our lavender essential oil is one of the best essential oils for general aromatherapy, it is highly known for its relaxing, antimicrobial, and antibacterial properties so is essential throughout the winter months. Lavender helps to restore Vitamin D by fighting the bacteria that weakens our skin health, protecting our skins ability to convert sunlight into Vitamin D.
My Essential Oil Recommendations
Many popular essential oils for cold weather includes our floral and citrus oils, such as Lemon Oil, Lavender Oil, Grapefruit Oil, and many more. All of these oils have calming and uplifting scents that boost our moods and provide us with a positive mindset.
Our Essential Oils with cooling qualities such as Lemon Eucalyptus and Peppermint are used to help reduce symptoms of colds and cases of flu. These oils have to clarify and energizing qualities that reduce the pains of congestion and body aches.
