Essential Oils for Sleep

A good night’s sleep is essential for maintaining a healthy body and mind. Unfortunately, many of us experience insomnia or other sleep-related problems at some point in our lives. While there are several sleeping aids available, essential oils are a natural option that can be very effective.

In this post, I’ll show you seven essential oils to help you to drift off into a peaceful slumber and how to use them.

Lavender Oil

One of the most famous and best essential oils for promoting relaxation and reducing anxiety is lavender essential oil. It has a calming impact on the mind and body and can help to lower temperature and blood pressure to help you drift off into a peaceful night’s sleep.

Marjoram Oil

Marjoram essential oil is an effective relaxant and is widely considered to be one of the best essential oils to aid with sleep. The aroma can help relieve stress which can help you unwind after a particularly challenging day.

Chamomile Oil

Chamomile oil has calming qualities and can help soothe the mind and body before bedtime. It has a mild, sweet aroma that can aid in relaxation and stress reduction.

Bergamot Oil

Bergamot essential oil is a citrus fragrance with an uplifting, refreshing aroma. It can aid in the reduction of stress and anxiety, both of which can add to sleep problems.

Ylang-ylang Oil

Ylang-ylang essential oil has a pleasant, floral aroma that can aid in relaxation and tension reduction. It has sedative properties that can help you to peacefully drift off.

Cedarwood oil

Cedarwood essential oil, like lavender, is thought to be beneficial for detoxification and emotional cleansing. Cedarwood essential oil is known for its sedative qualities and effectiveness in treating insomnia.

Its woody aroma is both soothing and grounding and inhaling it can help the brain to release serotonin which is the brain’s happy chemical.

Sandalwood oil

Sandalwood essential oil has a unique earthy yet sweet aroma and is frequently used in perfumes and air fresheners.

Sandalwood essential oil is excellent for relaxing the body, centring the mind, and decreasing anxiety. It can also help with other sleep-related issues like headaches and migraines while serving as a mild sedative.

How to use Essential Oils for Sleep

Essential oils can be used in a variety of methods to aid sleep. Before going to bed, one popular way is to diffuse them into your bedroom using an electric diffuser or DIY diffuser. For more information on how to use essential oils, tack a look at this other handy blog.

If you wanted to apply your essential oil topically, you can add a few drops to a carrier oil before applying it to your skin. To help with sleep, I suggest you apply your chosen oil to your wrists or temples.

Another alternative is to put a few drops of undiluted essential oils in a warm bath before going to bed.

If those methods aren’t possible, you could always apply a couple of drops to your pillow and breathe in the wonderful aromas whilst you drift off.
