Are Essential Oils Flammable?

Nearly all highly concentrated essential oils are flammable, so we suggest using them safely and keeping them away from flames and sparks. When you aren’t using your essential oils, keep them stored and sealed in their original bottle and be careful of any leaks or spills.

The low flash point of essential oil makes them highly flammable. Essential oil with a low flash point such as our Orange, Grapefruit, Peppermint and Chamomile essential oils are likely to catch fire next to a naked flame.

My Tips on Storing your Essential Oil Safely

Keep your Essential Oil in its Original Glass Bottle

At home, we take a number of measures helping to minimise any potential fire hazards. The first tip to ensure your essential oil avoids contact with an open flame is to keep it stored in its original dark glass bottle. With essential oils having many uses they can easily be left lying around the house, our dark glass bottles reduce the fire risk of oxidation.

Ensure the Cap of your Essential Oil Stays On!

Keeping the cap of your essential oil on not only reduces the chance of spills but avoids exposure to the natural sunlight which can lead to oxidation. Our solid screw cap lids are durable and avoid breaking down your essential oil.

Store your Essential Oil Away From Natural Sunlight

Storing your essential oil away from the sunlight and in a cool environment will avoid it oxidising and solidifying. I would recommend storing your essential oil at room temperature in drawers, shelves, or storage cabinets throughout your home.

What is the Most Flammable Essential Oil?

All essential oils are at risk of oxidising but there are a few essential oils with lower flash points than others. The most flammable essential oils that I would recommend you make sure you handle carefully are:
